A short list of websites I actually use when planning trips, checking conditions, or looking something up. No affiliate links, no sponsorship — just the sites that work.
Camping and accommodation
- DOC Places to Stay — Bookings and information for all Department of Conservation campsites, huts, and lodges. The booking system works well once you figure out the search filters.
- Holiday Parks New Zealand — Directory of holiday parks and motor camps across the country. Useful for comparing facilities and prices.
- CamperMate — App and website for finding campsites, dump stations, water fill points, and freedom camping spots. The user reviews are helpful for getting recent condition reports.
Weather and conditions
- MetService Nelson — Weather forecasts for Nelson and the wider region. Check the mountain forecast if you are heading into the ranges.
- Harvest Electronics River Flows — Real-time river level and flow data for rivers across the region. Essential before swimming or crossing rivers after rain.
Walks and tracks
- DOC Nelson Tasman — Official track descriptions, alerts, and closures for the Nelson/Tasman region. Check here before heading out — track closures after storms are common.
- Abel Tasman Water Taxis — Aqua Taxi schedules, prices, and booking. They also run scenic cruises if you want to see the coast without walking.
Regional information
- Nelson Tasman NZ — The regional tourism organisation. Good for events listings and general visitor information, though the recommendations lean toward the commercial end.
- Nelson City Council — Includes information on council-managed parks, reserves, and camping areas in the Nelson city area, including the Maitai Valley.
- Tasman District Council — Freedom camping rules, regional parks, and facility information for the Tasman district.
Safety
- AdventureSmart — Outdoor safety information from the NZ Mountain Safety Council. Covers trip planning, gear lists, and what to do if things go wrong.
- Water Safety NZ — River and beach safety advice. Worth a read if you are not familiar with swimming in New Zealand rivers.
